BIOGRAPHY
Andre “Dre” Martinez (b. Miami, 1983) is a multidisciplinary artist working on themes related to identity, history, and popular culture. Martinez’s works are an homage to the city and the struggle of everyday life. His pieces are saturated with obviousness, clichés, and bad jokes. He received his B.F.A from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I don’t paint things; I build paintings that capture a memory or feeling of my life. Adding or subtracting layers to the pieces are essential until they reach a level of familiarity I’m happy to see. Hip Hop, Pop Art, and daily life rituals have influenced my work and the way they are created. The work is fueled by ideas that I come up with on a daily basis and ingenuity makes them evident. I want the viewer to relate to the work on a personal level and give them a sense of ease.
